My dogs LOVE the beach. We take them down the hill from our house. We have to make sure we don't do it at low tide--learned that lesson the painful way for Katie...I got to play vet. I swear those dogs will fetch sticks and tennis balls out of the water till they drop.
It was so much fun. The weather was gorgeous. Kelsey did not like the beach. The sand bothered her paws and she was totally scared of the water. Lily is a water dog and apparently a 'pick up every stick on the beach' dog.
She doesn't eat Mei Mei... and Lily may look like she was running free, but she was being very closely watched, all the time. Her big problem is she goes to doggie daycare and thinks every dog wants to be her friend--I can assure you, some dogs do not want to be her friend.

I wish we had a dog that we could let run loose on the beach and not fear that she would eat a little dog she saw running by. :)
